Email #2: Story of One
Subject Line: Second Phase | Ruel's Story
Hi <<First Name>>,
I'd like to introduce you to Ruel. He's one of the young men we have the privilege of serving here at Second Phase.
Click Here for a Short Video!I met Ruel when he was 14 years old.
He had fled an abusive home at age five and got lost among the rough streets of the Philippines. He was taken in by a private orphanage until he aged out at 14, and was then referred to Children's Garden. Although he was now safe, years of emotional turmoil, and lack of family support left him quiet and distrusting.
But, over time he began to trust us.
He shared about his past and the many things going on in his heart and mind. We started to understand what led to his timidness and could hear his deep desire to open up and be involved with others.
After a breakthrough conversation, Ruel sought me out regularly to talk about life and the challenges it brings. His shyness began to dissipate while his hunger for relationships and learning grew. We explored his interests and talents. He has a mind like an engineer—even building his own lighting and alarm system for his locker!
Today, Ruel is a part of the Second Phase family. He's attending college and studying for a career in technology. He continues to explore architecture and 3D design. He's also experiencing significant emotional, social, and spiritual growth—working through conflict, planning for the future, and viewing family in new ways.
Although his journey is not yet complete, and there are more challenges to overcome, we are so proud of how far he's come. To think the quiet, hurting boy who walked through our doors is now in college and talking about a career and family. It's incredible!
Second Phase exists to walk with these young men into successful adulthood—changing the trajectory of their lives—in hopes of affecting entire generations. With God's help and the love, mentoring, and support of others like you, amazing things are happening.
In His Service,
Billy
